A long time ago, there was an ancient city-state on the coast of
Turkey, across the sea from Sparta. This city-state was named Troy. At one
time, Troy and the other Greek city-states were pretty good friends. But times
had changed.
The city of Troy was protected by a high wall built around the
city. Some parts of the wall were 20 feet high! There were gates in the wall to
let people in and out but it provided great defense for the people of Troy.
It gave the Trojan warriors a relatively safe place to stand,
while they rained arrows down on the people below, who were trying to break
into the city.
The Greek warriors had been trying to breach the wall around Troy
for about ten years. The Greeks could not find a way in, and the Trojans did
not seem able to drive the Greeks away.
Odysseus, a Greek general, had an idea. His plan was to build a
horse, a beautiful and huge wooden horse, and leave it outside the gate. Then,
the entire Greek army would pretend to leave, as if they had finally admitted
defeat.
But the horse would be hollow. Thirty men would be hiding inside.
That's what they did.
As the Greek warriors sailed away, the people of Troy rushed
outside, cheering. They found the horse. Fortunately, they did not try to burn
the horse. They dragged the horse inside the city gates to keep it on display,
which is just what the Greek general thought they would do - gloat.
That night, while the Trojan people were sleeping, the men hiding
inside the wooden horse climbed out and opened the gates.
The waiting Greek army entered Troy. That was the end of Troy.
81% of Isis-linked suspects charged in US are American citizens
As politicians rush to curb refugee intake, research reveals 55 of
68 people indicted over alleged Isis ties were born in US and none came from Syria
None of the Isis-linked suspects who have ever been charged in the
United States came from Syria and the overwhelming majority were born in the
US, research reveals.
Sixty-eight people have been indicted because of alleged
involvement in Isis, of whom 18 have been convicted, with an average sentence
of 10 years three months, according to figures published this week by Center on
National Security at Fordham University.
Yet despite a growing political clamour over a perceived security
threat posed by an influx of Syrian refugees, the data shows that only three of
those indicted in connection with Isis was a refugee or asylum seeker; none
came from Syria.
Instead 55, or 80.9%, of the individuals concerned are US
citizens, including 44 who were born in America. The rest include six born in
Bosnia, four in Uzbekistan, three in Somalia and two in Sudan. Fifty-eight are
men and 10 are women. The average age is 26 and around a third are under 21,
The typical alleged Islamic State adherent is intent on fighting

The center classifies more than half arrested of those and charged
as “foreign fighters/ aspirants”, around a quarter are “domestic plotters” and
about one-fifth are “facilitators”.

“Based on the evidence available, the number of ISIS supporters in

Feb 17, 2016 - “The year saw an apparent comeback of Klan groups,”
the organization found, with a 164% increase in the number of active groups.
On Sunday, CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Trump whether he’d repudiate
the support of David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku
Klux Klan, or “other white supremacists.” Trump evaded the question:

Tapper: Okay, I’m just talking about David Duke and the Ku Klux
Klan here but…
Trump: Honestly, I don’t know David Duke. I don’t believe I’ve
ever met him. I’m pretty sure I didn’t meet him, and I just don’t know anything
about him.

the Reform Party, because it “now includes a Klansman, Mr. Duke, a neo-Nazi,

“We are seeing a galvanization of support for a mainstream
candidate. In three decades,” says Levin, “I can’t remember this kind of
support gravitating toward one candidate, except perhaps George Wallace, maybe
Pat Buchanan. But none of them was a leading candidate in his party.” Levin
adds that while Trump has been on the rise, the KKK has also enjoyed a
renaissance of sorts this past year.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, one of the leading organizations
for tracking the activities of hate groups, warned last month that the number
of KKK chapters in the United States had grown significantly in 2015, from 72
to 190; it also estimated that the number of Klansmen is now between some 5,000
to 8,000.
The organization has also been spotted in areas where it had not
been witnessed for many years. Levin, who has studied the group for 30 years,
was surprised to hear last month that the KKK was planning a rally in
California – a state where the white robes and hoods have not been seen in a
long time.
But even though the group’s activities are on the rise, the number
of KKK members at the actual rally was less than the number of protesters
demonstrating against them. When they appeared, the Klansmen were attacked by
protesters, and Levin himself was forced to protect one of the extremists. “You
know you’ve fallen on hard times when you need a Jewish man as your wingman,”
Levin laughs.
He says that although
the support for a leading mainstream presidential candidate by groups such as
the KKK has historic importance and mustn’t be ignored, the immediate danger
actually comes from other, more powerful organizations.
In California, for example, the real danger comes from white
supremacists, neo-Nazis and others who are unaffiliated but with similar
beliefs, Levin explains.
“I want to put this in
perspective: there are more rotary dial phones in the United States than Klan
members. We have much more danger from unaffiliated haters, skinheads, and
neo-Nazi and white supremacist criminal syndicates” says Levin, noting that
these groups are smart enough not to have rallies.
He says that although the
support for a leading mainstream presidential candidate by groups such as the
KKK has historic importance and mustn’t be ignored, the immediate danger
actually comes from other, more powerful organizations.

At a time when the KKK and its support for Trump is attracting
headlines, it is important also to examine the Republican candidate’s influence
on other hate groups in the United States – those who don’t shield their
delight that the New York billionaire has made statements against minorities
part of the mainstream political discourse.

listened and I’ve studied and there is NOTHING, absolutely nothing, in this
man’s track record that makes Donald Trump “on my side.”
I refuse to let my desire to win “trump” my moral compass. I will
not sell my soul or my university’s to a political process that values victory
more than virtue.

This past week, I actually had a student come forward after a
university chapel service and complain because he felt “victimized” by a sermon
on the topic of 1 Corinthians 13. It appears this young scholar felt offended
because a homily on love made him feel bad for not showing love. In his mind,
the speaker was wrong for making him, and his peers, feel uncomfortable.
I’m not making this up. Our culture has actually taught our kids
to be this self-absorbed and narcissistic. Any time their feelings are hurt,
they are the victims. Anyone who dares challenge them and, thus, makes them
“feel bad” about themselves, is a “hater,” a “bigot,” an “oppressor,” and a
“victimizer.”
I have a message for this young man and all others who care to
listen. That feeling of discomfort you have after listening to a sermon is
called a conscience. An altar call is supposed to make you feel bad. It is
supposed to make you feel guilty. The goal of many a good sermon is to get you
to confess your sins—not coddle you in your selfishness. The primary objective
of the Church and the Christian faith is your confession, not your
self-actualization.
So here’s my advice:
If you want the chaplain to tell you you’re a victim rather than
tell you that you need virtue, this may not be the university you’re looking
for. If you want to complain about a sermon that makes you feel less than
loving for not showing love, this might be the wrong place.
If you’re more interested in playing the “hater” card than you are
in confessing your own hate; if you want to arrogantly lecture, rather than
humbly learn; if you don’t want to feel guilt in your soul when you are guilty
of sin; if you want to be enabled rather than confronted, there are many
universities across the land (in Missouri and elsewhere) that will give you
exactly what you want, but Oklahoma Wesleyan isn’t one of them.
At OKWU, we teach you to be selfless rather than self-centered. We
are more interested in you practicing personal forgiveness than political
revenge. We want you to model interpersonal reconciliation rather than foment
personal conflict. We believe the content of your character is more important
than the color of your skin. We don’t believe that you have been victimized
every time you feel guilty and we don’t issue “trigger warnings” before altar
calls.
Oklahoma Wesleyan is not a “safe place”, but rather, a place to
learn: to learn that life isn’t about you, but about others; that the bad
feeling you have while listening to a sermon is called guilt; that the way to
address it is to repent of everything that’s wrong with you rather than blame
others for everything that’s wrong with them. This is a place where you will
quickly learn that you need to grow up.
This is not a day care. This is a university.

The authors of the book The Russia-China Axis claim that in late
2011 the then Prime Minister Vladimir Putin stated that his country could
annihilate the United States in a “half-hour of less.”
Putin made the remarks before guests at a lavish banquet at the
New Century, Moscow’s richest equestrian club, MSN reported.
The former and soon-to-be president addressed his guests on topics
ranging from the “Russian government’s loss of public trust to his own
indispensable leadership,” according to the book’s authors, Douglas E. Schoen
and Melik Kaylan
He went on to express his displeasure with U.S. plans to build a
missile defense system in Eastern Europe: a Bush administration initiative,
which Obama nixed shortly after taking office in 2009.
Putin also addressed the Americans in attendance, “You ask me
whether we are going to change,” he said. “The ball is in your court. Will you
change?”
In his view, the U.S. only has interest in Russia because it is
the only nation that could “destroy America in half an hour or less.”
Two years ago, Igor Strelkov was the most notorious personality of
the war in east Ukraine. A former Russian security forces officer, with a
clipped grey moustache and a penchant for historical re-enactments, Strelkov
led the takeover of the town of Slavyansk in April 2014, which presaged the
armed conflict across the region.
In Kiev, he was seen as a bloody and ruthless war criminal – a
Kremlin agent sent by Moscow to wreak havoc in Ukraine. In Russia, he was
portrayed as a valiant military hero, leading the local rebel forces in their
fight against Kiev. He could be found striding through the corridors of the
Donetsk rebel headquarters, with a Stechkin pistol in a vintage wooden holster
at his hip and flanked by heavily armed bodyguards.
Two years later, he cuts a very different figure, during an
interview with the Guardian at his small Moscow office. In civilian clothing
and slightly chubbier, he spent the encounter stroking his huge Maine Coon cat,
Grumpy, which lay on the table in front of him. Strelkov has in recent weeks
turned his rhetorical fire on the Kremlin itself, even if he no longer has an
army with which to back up his words.
“Putin and his circle have recently taken steps which I believe
will almost inevitably lead to the collapse of the system,” Strelkov said. “We
don’t know yet how, and we don’t know when, but we are certain it will
collapse, and more likely sooner than later.”
Pulled out of east Ukraine by the Kremlin in August 2014,
reportedly because the Russian authorities felt he was too much of a liability,
Strelkov entered a strange twilight zone, prevented from returning to the
conflict or featuring in state-controlled media.
After nearly two years of sitting quietly, the erstwhile poster
boy of the pro-Russia cause last week released a declaration strongly critical
of President Vladimir Putin, and predicting upheaval and bloodshed in Russia in
the near future.
Strelkov, whose real surname is Girkin (Strelkov is a pseudonym
derived from the Russian for “the Shooter”), believes Putin dithered at the
crucial moment in 2014, for fear of breaking off ties between Russia and the
west for good.
A radical nationalist who believes Russia should seize all the
lands where ethnic Russians live, and who describes Ukrainians as “Russians who
speak a different dialect”, Strelkov said it was fatal that Putin stopped after
annexing Crimea.
“He crossed the Rubicon, but then stopped unexpectedly and
illogically. He didn’t retreat, but didn’t go forward either. He has no ideas
and seems to be waiting for a miracle. He’s stuck in the middle of a swamp.”
Strelkov, who studied history and models himself on the White
officers who fought the Bolsheviks during the Russian civil war, has been put
on international sanctions lists for his role in the Ukraine war.
Last week, Polish MP Małgorzata Gosiewska presented a report on
alleged war crimes committed by Strelkov to the international criminal court in
the Hague, and hopes an inquiry will be launched.
Strelkov does not deny having people shot for looting, but claims
the executions were legal, as they were carried out according to a Soviet law
on wartime justice.
“I was the only person to hold trials, and not just shoot people.
It was a troika of judges with a military prosecutor and a lawyer, and there
were innocent verdicts as well,” he said.
“In military circumstances without strict discipline and without
the vengeful sword of justice, the situation would not be controllable. When I
was commanding, there was none of that. Every soldier knew that if he committed
a crime, he would be punished as harshly as an enemy, if not more harshly. This
helped a lot with discipline.”
It is unclear to what extent Strelkov’s actions in Ukraine were
coordinated with the Kremlin. During the annexation of Crimea, in which
Strelkov took part, the Russian military operation was carefully choreographed.
However, some suggest that when the action moved to east Ukraine, he was
working more in a freelance role, in touch with contacts and curators in
Moscow, but not actively directed by them.
Having fought as a volunteer in Transdniestr and Bosnia in the
early 1990s, he served during both Chechen wars as an officer in Russia’s FSB
security services. He claims he retired from active duty “after a personal
conflict” in 2012, declining to elaborate.
“I was to a large extent an independent figure,” he insisted of
his role in east Ukraine. He said he used all his contacts to demand a
full-scale Russian invasion, but it soon became clear this was not forthcoming.
Russia has denied all
involvement in Ukraine, though Putin in December admitted there were “people
who carried out certain tasks” in the region. Strelkov himself declined to
comment on the level of Russian official involvement, saying only that “you may
draw your own conclusions”.
There is overwhelming evidence of Russian financial and military
support for the rebels as well as of Russian regular troops entering the
conflict at key moments, and some rebel sources have claimed that the
withdrawal of the unpredictable Strelkov was one of the preconditions set by
the Kremlin ahead of sending troops covertly to inflict a crushing defeat on
the Ukrainians during the battle of Ilovaysk.
Ever since Strelkov was told to leave Ukraine in August 2014, the
Kremlin has put him on the “stop list”; the unofficial list of those it is
impermissible to give airtime to on state television, which includes most of
the liberal opposition.
“I’m an inconvenient figure for them, they don’t know what to do
with me: am I a hero or a terrorist? They can’t arrest and jail me because it
would be seen as bowing to the west to call me a terrorist. But to give me
honours is also inconvenient for them, so I’m in this strange gap.”
An associate complained that nobody wanted to speak to the former
Donetsk commander; even journalists who expressed an interest later called back
to say they had been told it was better not to speak to him.
“The authorities don’t want independent politicians or people who
think freely, whatever camp they belong to. They don’t even want free-thinking
supporters,” said Strelkov.
The manifesto released last week is a mixture of both surprisingly
liberal promises about freedom of speech and free elections, together with
imperial rhetoric of expanding Russian lands and protecting Russians in former
Soviet states.
“We might seem like marginals but it didn’t take the Bolsheviks
more than 1% of the population to change things in 1917,” said Egor Prosvirnin,
who runs a nationalist blog and also signed the declaration together with
Strelkov and a number of other nationalists. “Things could change very, very
quickly.”
Strelkov and his group of nationalist bloggers and fringe
political figures do indeed appear to be marginal figures.
But nationalism is a powerful political force in Russia, and many
wonder if the flames that were fanned in east Ukraine in 2014 will be easy to
put out, now that the Kremlin is seeking a diplomatic solution that would still
give it a say in Ukrainian affairs.
“The Kremlin is very scared of nationalists, because they use the
same imperial rhetoric as Putin does but they can do it much better than him,”
said Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption campaigner and opposition politician.
“That’s why there are
nationalists in prison, even those who supported Putin. They went to kiss his
feet, and he kicked them away.”
Others say that a figure like Strelkov, after his brief months in
the limelight in 2014, is doomed to remain peripheral from now on, addressing
small groups of nationalists in his discussion tours around the country, but
unlikely to win broad appeal.
Strelkov said he does not plan to stand for elected office, but
thinks his time could come again.
“We do not plan to launch a revolution to depose Vladimir Putin.
Having taken part in five wars, I know very well what it is like when authority
and social infrastructure collapses in big cities.
Nobody wants that, including me. But unfortunately, it could be
inevitable.”

When news broke early Friday night that the Chicago rally had been
canceled because of safety fears, you didn’t need to be a programming genius to

spoke on cable news channels about how his First Amendment rights were being
violated. He was doing all of this while reaching a far larger audience than he
could have ever done while actually speaking at a rally.

Roosevelt was sworn in as president makes the venue’s selection even more
bizarre.
Following the rally’s cancellation, Trump supporters expressed
surprise at the number of protesters that were filling the lines and streaming
into the event on a campus that is 25 percent Hispanic, 25 percent Asian and 8
percent black. William Daley, son of former Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley, did
not share that surprise. “Whoever picked that location knew what they were
doing as far as poking that sleeping dog there,” Daley said, suggesting to the
New York Times that the venue was staged for the purpose of provoking protests
that would energize Trump’s own supporters.
It would also land Trump on cable news channels throughout the
night, talking nonstop over endless loops of skirmishes that paled in
comparison with rowdy celebrations that often explode in American cities after
sports championships.
Yet everyone got sucked into the political sideshow. Ted Cruz and
Marco Rubio’s brief appearances on TV during the rolling cable news coverage
only made their own candidacies seem smaller under the glare of Donald’s Big
Tent Show.
It was all a far cry from the kind of political riots that
Americans saw during the 1968 Democratic convention. Those riots flickered
across Americans’ television screens while the nation was still absorbing the
shock waves of violent convulsions that had ripped across the country during
the first half of that horrifying year. The Tet Offensive, launched in January,
led to February’s record number of Americans killed in Vietnam,
more than 500 in one week alone. In March, Lyndon Johnson
announced he would not seek reelection after being shocked in New Hampshire’s
primary by antiwar crusader Eugene McCarthy.
The next month, dozens of cities went up in flames following the
assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Eight weeks later, Bobby Kennedy was
gunned down in California after winning that state’s Democratic primary.
As Mayor Daley’s city went under siege on the night of Aug. 28,
Americans were more divided politically, racially and culturally than any time
since the end of the Civil War a century earlier.
Serving as backdrops to the
Chicago riots were a bloody war, campus chaos, urban riots, murdered heroes and
a 200-year-established order suddenly under siege.
America was at war with itself and for good reason. But Friday
night’s farce was a made-for-television event with a handful of Trump
supporters squaring off against protesters offended by Trump’s presence on
their campus.
Unfortunately for his opponents, most of the protesters who
appeared on camera during the night shouted profanities at cameras, intimidated
others being interviewed by networks and played directly into the Republican
front-runner’s hands.
